Bodmin Jail

Bodmin Jail, as featured on ITV’s Most Haunted, was built in 1779 on the orders of King George III. It was built by the prisoners themselves, using granite from Bodmin’s ‘Cuckoo Quarry’. It was the last County Jail in Cornwall, closing in 1927. The jail had been left to decay until 2004, when the Wheten family bought the site – now all revenue form entrance fees and profit from the on-site shop goes towards the restoration of the jail. Visit the jail itself with its cold, dark cells and original hanging pit, and discover the jail’s gruesome past – or if you’re feeling really brave, why not join medium Mark Rablin on one of the hugely popular Ghost Walks? Bodmin Jail has a bar and lounge which serves hot and cold refreshments - and a dining room, where a range of home cooked food, including Sunday roast dinners, is available. Bodmin Jail is open every day from 10am til dusk. Further information can be found at the website to the right.
