Newlyn

Newlyn is Cornwall's busiest fishing port. With over 40 acres of harbour, it has one of the largest fishing fleets in the UK. The port has a few galleries to browse, and the fish market is also well worth a see. Each August Bank Holiday Monday, the Newlyn Fish Festival takes place on the quay. Stalls and cafes are set up around the quay and locally caught fish can be sampled. The Newlyn landscape has long provided artists with inspiration, and the port was home to the Newlyn School - led by Stanhope Forbes and Walter Langley. Many artists still live in the area today. The Newlyn Art Gallery, designed by Passmore Edwards, and built in 1895, was used to exhibit the work of the Newlyn School. Today, however, this work is displayed in the Penlee House Museum at Penzance. The Newlyn Art Gallery now displays the work of its own society.
